COURSE DESCRIPTIONS
Pre-algebra bridges the gap between elementary arithmetic and algebra, preparing students for more advanced mathematics. It focuses on building a foundation in algebraic concepts, including solving equations, manipulating expressions, and understanding variables. Pre-algebra often covers topics like integers, fractions, decimals, ratios, proportions, and basic geometry. This course is typically taken between 6th to 9th grade.
Algebra 1 introduces students to the fundamentals of algebra, including variables, expressions, equations, and inequalities. It builds upon arithmetic skills and lays the groundwork for more advanced mathematical concepts. Students learn to solve problems using algebraic techniques and explore the relationships between variables and numbers. This course is typically taken in 8th or 9th grade.
Geometry explores the fundamental concepts of shapes, sizes, and dimensions, focusing on both theoretical understanding and practical applications. Students delve into geometric figures like points, lines, and planes, and learn about angles, triangles, quadrilaterals, circles, and other geometric figures. The course also covers topics like congruence, similarity, trigonometry, transformations, area, volume, and coordinate geometry. This course is typically taken in 9th or 10th grade.
Algebra 2/Trig builds upon Algebra 1 concepts and introduces trigonometric functions. It covers advanced algebraic topics like polynomials, functions, systems of equations, and complex numbers, while also delving into trigonometric ratios, functions, and their applications. This course is typically taken in 10th or 11th grade.
Precalculus bridges the gap between algebra and calculus, focusing on the in-depth study of functions and their applications, including polynomial, rational, exponential, logarithmic, and trigonometric functions. It also covers analytical geometry, conic sections, and the algebra of functions. This course strengthens mathematical understanding and reasoning skills necessary for success in higher-level math courses like calculus. This course is typically taken in 11th or 12th grade.
